Hello everyone from YouTube,
Thanks for checking out my site! I want to write a separate section about the games I play and my honest thoughts about them. Should a video be a little hard to make due to circumstances, I'm thinking of writing it as a review of sorts here. I'll make sure to clarify my personal thoughts too! I'm still learning a lot; I hope you'll enjoy this rough draft I wrote.
Intro:
How would you react if you were in a situation where your silence determines your survival? In that world, how do you cope with the loss of a loved one? If silence is the future, how would you voice yourself?Â
Hello everyone, my name is Andre Ornelas, otherwise known as Dezaos. Welcome to A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead. Before we sink our teeth into the story of The Road Ahead, I highly recommend you watch the films before playing the game to understand the world-building of the Quiet Place trilogy.Â
In recap, the story behind A Quiet Place Pt. 1 and 2 follows the story of the Abbott family. To speak casually about it, the family undergoes trials as they reach a settlement on the water while adapting to a world overthrown by aliens called Death Angels. These Aliens are blind and gifted with a highly developed sense of hearing that could be life or death if they hear you. Fun fact: I eventually watched Day One in November during Thanksgiving week.
Future Andre edit: Ya'll, I just finished watching A Quiet Place Day One, and OH MY GOSH, was it a great movie. I understand the direction the game went in relation to how Day One was written. Prepare to listen closely as we dive into A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead.Â
Story:Â
We enter the game and are introduced to our main character, Alex Taylor. Alex is accompanied by her boyfriend, Martin, as they stalk a deer in the woods. At this point, the invasion mentioned in A Quiet Place has not begun. As the two explore the woods, Martin pranks Alex and scares her into an Asthma attack. His mother, Laura, finds them in time to help Martin care for Alex. Flashing forward to Day 105 of survival, we continue with Alex and Martin on a raid for supplies for their residency at a hospital. The two gather at Red Cloud Ranch and begin their hunt for things needed, such as food, batteries, and medicine. Alex learns about a campground run by The National Guard that could help with their limited supplies during their scourge. As she continues to explore an infirmary nearby, she uses a pregnancy test and discovers that she is pregnant. The hunt ends when they find a soundproof shelter to hunker down for the night. Alex tells Martin about the test results, and he is ecstatic. He communicates that he will do anything for the baby, even agreeing to leave for the settlement Alex learned about earlier in the mission. The night goes by, and the next day begins. As they leave for the hospital, Alex gets trapped climbing over a log, which creates a lot of noise and alerts a nearby Death Angel. Martin distracts the alien, saving Alex’s life but sacrificing his in the process.Â
A few days of mourning pass, and we are introduced to Alex’s father, Kenneth. He reveals that he knew about her pregnancy from signs that a doctor himself could easily identify and continues to hold the secret for her. He is hesitant to leave but promises Alex to check out the settlement. The hospital faces internal corruption and abuse of power; the two plan on moving out to settle with the settlement run by the National Guard instead. Kenneth communicates that it has to be done in stealth. Alex secretly gathers resources around the hospital and almost gets caught by Mark, the corrupt leader of the hospital settlement. As Alex waits for her father to confirm information on the settlement, she takes out her pregnancy test and passes out. Laura, now in a depressive state over the death of her husband and son, finds the test in Alex’s hands and locks her in the room in desperation to keep her unborn grandchild safe and Alex contained. Throughout the game, we learn more of Laura’s disdain for Alex. As Alex plans an escape using the vents, her father returns and assists her to escape. Crawling the vents, she sees Laura and Mark confront Kenneth and create a mass panic in the hospital, even letting a Death Angel loose on the residence in the process. Alex is separated from her father and escapes the hospital. As Alex continues her adventure to the settlement, Mark and Laura go hunting for her. Mark is killed in the process, and Laura tries to hold her hostage at gunpoint. Being saved at the last minute by the approach of a Death Angel, Alex escapes from Laura’s hold.Â
We are then returned to the flashback of Alex and Martin recovering from the forest. It was Kenneth’s birthday, and the two provided their services for the party. The two communicate about music and their relationships with their families, the loss of Alex’s mother, Laura’s fascination with guns, Kenneth’s mourning for his wife, and ultimately, the reveal of the astroids sending the Death Angels to Earth, as seen in Quiet Place Part 2.Â
In the present, Alex explores an otter-themed campsite and finds her father in a studio room. As the two reconnect, it’s shown that Kenneth has a leg injury from the escape. He informs Alex that the intent for the radio is broken and needs to be fixed. Her father then instructs Alex around the camp to the tower to get the radio to work again. Laura is heard on the radio as she talks to Kenneth, trying to find Alex. The two learn that the evacuation meet-up is at the harbor. As Alex returns to the studio, she sees her father and Laura fighting outside. Laura shoots her father, and the shot alarms a nearby Death Angel, leading Laura offscreen in the process. Alex escapes from the campsite and continues her journey, not just for herself but for her child. She mourns for her father near a waterfall and continues on. She goes through trials at a wrecked train near a bridge that would continue her path to the harbor; another flashback cuts in as she escapes encounters with multiple death angels to a detour inside a water plant. In the aftermath of Day One of the invasion, Martin, Laura, and her husband Robert are seen inside the van, dodging and avoiding danger. Robert and Alex sit in the back and defend the van with shotguns. The van crashes, and Alex is face to face with a Death Angel. As she tries to use the shotgun against the Alien, Robert gives his life for Alex, further revealing Laura’s hatred of Alex.Â
Returning to Alex finding her way into the pump system, Alex navigates through a huge waterworks system as the Death Angels follow her inside. She learns more about the people who kept the place running in an attempt to provide people with clean water. She continues on to find a boat to the settlement. She harnesses televisions found in stores near the harbor to distract the Death Angels from spotting her, even getting to a nearby fire station with a working boat. Death Angels stalk the station, and Alex finds herself overwhelmed. She learns that the boat area is covered in smoke and debris. She tries desperately to open a valve to the boat room but passes out; someone lifts her to a room. It’s none other than Laura, who is surprisingly still alive. Laura expresses that she did it to save the baby and leaves Alex with a gas mask. She then leaves the room after Alex comforts her by placing Laura’s hand on her stomach. The two part ways and Alex sneaks her way to the boat. As she gets the boat to start, a death angle attacks but fails to kill her. As Alex finds herself steering to safety, one last death angel surprises her and is killed shotgun style as Alex safely continues on the water. A transition to her miles away from land reveals that she hears a radio signal asking if anyone is there. She responds quietly, and the game ends.Â
Mechanics:Â
I enjoyed the game's story and, quite frankly, had fun while playing. I admit I did have a little trouble getting used to the asthma stress mechanic during some missions, but it was nothing too hard to adapt to. One small thing that I brought attention to was the abundance of medications and inhalers found in the game to be a little unrealistic. Regardless, I was able to manage resources well. I appreciate the interactable mechanics of operating things in the world and felt as if I were actually sneaking out of places trying to be undetected… which led to many deaths due to my own incompetence. Regardless of some moments of frustration, I admit the game sets out to do what it intended to show: No sound is safe. Another thing that I appreciated was the gradual introduction to mechanics as the story progressed, even giving the player a chance to practice the mechanics if needed. One small nitpick is the default disable of the creature alert symbol and awareness meter. I believe first-time players should be given those accommodations on first gameplay and unlock a harder difficulty with those accommodations removed, similar to how Alien Isolation has a Nightmare mode where the AI of the alien is drastically more attentive. Earlier in the game, it was communicated that the phonometer could detect your microphone. I admit that one downside that I did not appreciate was a technical issue; I had tried to use an external mic to play the noise detection mode. However, I hold this to personal trouble and not the game’s. I appreciate the accessibility features the game provides; however, it makes the game well accessible for a vast number of players. Â
End
Translating a movie to a game form is no easy task, but I think A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead did very well. It got a lot of beats from the film and even gave players an interesting hypothetical with its main protagonist.Â
Does this game have flaws? Yes, it does. But overall, those flaws don’t hinder the game in my eyes.Â
Anyways, guys, that’s it for me. If you enjoyed today’s episode, please like, subscribe, and comment on what I should cover next. I’ll see you guys in the next one!
